I'm going to first off state that your post is very colorful.
But on-topic, I'm going to start with the generic idea that a hero is a person who saves people. Now to expand on that, the hero doesn't always have to put him/herself in a state of danger to save someone. A doctor can always be considered a hero because they save several lives of their patients without putting themselves in extraordinary danger. So yes, a hero can be your average Joe.

A hero can be anybody and they don't have to save a life. For example, all children have to do a surprise quiz but then one kid in the class distracts the teacher or gets in trouble on purpose by the teacher to waste time until the class is released for lunch, or whatever, and don't have to do the quiz. Those kids would say that kid was a hero for saving them from doing the quiz and getting himself in trouble for the rest of them.

No. A hero is defined by his/her peers and not by himself. To go back to Nethaera's example, let's say all of the children in that classroom wanted to take that quiz at that time for some crazy reason. The kid who got punished would think he did something to save the children from the quiz, but the kids won't define it as heroic.

To tell you the truth, that's kind of a hard question.
Well, let me give you guys another simple answer. Someone who is not a hero is a villain. I mean, think about it. In all of your life up until this point, you probably have done something heroic, even it is minor. Even if you don't remember it, other people might still consider it heroic, thus considering you heroic. But, if all of your life you have chose to make the wrong choices, then that supposedly makes you a villain.

I don't see the choices people make changing from bad to good due to time. I mean how would that happen? I could only see that happening coincidentally. Like let's say there's this guy and he breaks two of your ribs. You go to the hospital, you think the nurse is cute and you go out together. You two are perfect together and live happily ever after. That's just a coincidence that the guy breaking your ribs helped you have a happy life. But that wasn't the guy's intention in the first place...
